Searching for the Seagull Motel

“It is only possible to understand our motivations many years after the fact, when the actions we have taken are irrevocable. At that point, all that remains is to laugh.”

Searching for the Seagull Motel is a memoir of the author’s experiences back in 1976 as a door-to-door Bible salesman, longshoreman, warehouse worker, and administrative assistant to a pimp in the grittiest city in North America, Port Arthur, Texas. Along the way, Seagull Motel also touches on the lives of bar brawlers, sailors, suicides, strippers, hustlers, whores, hermits, beached whales, refinery workers, vengeful professors, larcenous preachers, great but neglected painters, the pirate Jean Lafitte, and a brilliant entrepreneur who built a city based on messages delivered to him by brownies and faeries.
